How do the Anti Wrinkle - Botox Injections work?
When you laugh, frown, concentrate or squint your facial muscles contract and your skin creases. As you get older your skin loses its elasticity and the creases deepen into lines and become permanently etched on your face. These anti wrinkle injections can be injected into specific facial muscles so that the nerve impulses for contraction of these muscles are blocked.
In having this Botox / Anti Wrinkle Injections treatment in the facial muscles, it causes a temporary weakness or paralysis of that muscle resulting in the overlying skin becoming smooth and unwrinkled. The effects of the injections are temporary. Commonly the effects wear off after about three months, however the longevity of the injections can sometimes be increased with repeated treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the limitations of Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum Toxin is best at treating dynamic facial lines i.e. those caused by facial muscular activity. This treatment does not improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damage which are unrelated to facial muscle activity. The effects of the injections will generally last around 3 – 4 months. Facial muscles that are larger (such as in men) or which are used by facially ‘expressive’ clients may require more frequent treatments.
Who is suitable for treatment?
Starting in our late twenties, facial lines and wrinkles begin to appear that affect not just your appearance, but also your self-esteem and even your choice of career. By smoothing out those lines Botox can help you restore a more youthful, less stressed expression to your face. Many people can benefit from Botulinum Toxin – not just celebrities! It can work as well for men as it does for women, in fact many men are already experiencing the benefits of a younger, more relaxed looking appearance that it can provide.
Who is not suitable for treatment?
Anyone who is pregnant, breast feeding or suffering from severe neuromuscular disorders, Bell’s palsy or blood coagulation disorders, are not suitable for treatment.
Will it interact with any medication I am taking?
Drug interactions can occur when Botulinum Toxin is used concomitantly with other medications. We will ask you about any medications you are taking, especially aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin, neomycin), aspirin, anti-inflammatories, Gingko Biloba and St John’s Wort.
Are there any side effects?
Botulinum Toxin has been used for over 20 years to treat facial wrinkles and its safety and efficacy has been shown in many clinical trials. In addition there have been no long term side effects reported from its’ use. However, whilst uncommon, temporary adverse effects may arise from the treatment. Occasionally a small bruise may occur at the injection site – this can be covered with make-up. In very rare circumstances patients may experience heaviness or descent of the eyebrow or eyelid which may last a few weeks. Prior to treatment your risk of this will be assessed and your treatment will be adjusted accordingly.
